At Splendid Seasons, we believe every child deserves a chance to learn, grow, and feel included. That’s why we partnered with Sathsewana Children’s Home in Mirigama, which supports children with special needs, to help them develop hands-on skills and confidence through two LED lighting workshops.
Creating Decorative Lamps – The First Step
Our first session introduced the children to making LED decorative lamps. Using safe tools and colorful materials, the children learned how to create their own lights. What stood out most wasn’t just the final product — it was the happiness and pride the children felt while building something beautiful with their own hands. For many, it was a brand-new experience.
Upgrading Skills – Household Bulb Workshop
Seeing their enthusiasm, we returned with a second session — this time focusing on household LED bulbs. We taught them how to assemble working light bulbs using basic components like circuits and LED drivers. The children quickly picked up the steps, and with a bit of guidance, they successfully built bulbs that actually worked. This new skill gave them both a sense of achievement and a glimpse into real-world applications.
Connecting with Pettah Suppliers and Market Opportunities
To make the project sustainable, we connected Sathsewana with reliable LED suppliers in Pettah Market, ensuring they have access to affordable components. But we didn’t stop there — we also helped open up pathways to sell the handmade lights, including shops and local exhibitions. This way, their creations can be appreciated by others while earning support for the children and the home.
More Than Just Skills – Encouraging Social Interaction
One of our main goals was to help the children socialize. Often, children with special needs face isolation and limited chances to interact. These group activities encouraged teamwork, conversation, and joy. We watched them collaborate, teach each other, and celebrate their creations — proof that they can thrive when given the right opportunities.
A Brighter Future
This initiative is more than a one-time event. It’s part of our long-term mission to empower children with special needs by giving them useful skills, market exposure, and a sense of belonging. We hope to continue these workshops and help Sathsewana children one day run their own small-scale enterprises with pride.
