Originally from Bogawanthalawa, Moorthi has taken on the full-time role of caretaker of our land in Kithulgala. His main responsibility is to ensure the property is protected and healthy—checking the boundaries, maintaining paths, keeping the ecosystem clean and undisturbed. But Moorthi isn’t just a watchful eye. In between his caretaking duties, he cultivates various crops like bananas, lemongrass, and medicinal herbs within the land’s natural layout.

These small-scale cultivations serve a dual purpose: they help keep the soil fertile and thriving, and they also offer Moorthi a valuable secondary income. At Splendid Seasons, we happily buy his herbs and fruits at a fair price, using them in teas, dehydrated blends, and wellness products.

Moorthi’s work is a beautiful example of how land can be used respectfully and sustainably. Without clear-cutting or heavy machinery, he’s been able to generate meaningful harvests using the forest’s own rhythms—natural shade, rainfall, and nutrient cycling.

Beyond that, the arrangement benefits both sides. While we gain fresh, chemical-free ingredients for our products, Moorthi earns not just a salary for caretaking, but also an ongoing income from what he grows. This holistic model supports dignity, self-reliance, and smart land stewardship.
