The use of papaya leaf in traditional Sri Lankan medicine, especially within the indigenous healing practice known as Hela Wedakama, dates back centuries. Healers would often use crushed or boiled papaya leaves to treat fevers, digestive issues, and liver-related disorders. The plant was especially valued during outbreaks of tropical diseases, when the leaves were used to stimulate the immune system and support recovery. In village communities, papaya leaves were also applied externally for skin infections and wounds.
Papaya itself was introduced to the island through Southeast Asia or Central America centuries ago, but it quickly became integrated into both Sri Lankan agriculture and medicine, thriving in the island’s warm, humid climate. The abundance and accessibility of the papaya plant made its leaf an important and affordable home remedy.
