Ghanapala’s Story – Farming Roots Near Home in Ambepussa

In the quiet village of Pirisyala, just minutes from our Splendid Seasons factory in Ambepussa, lives Ghanapala—a farmer whose connection to the land runs deep. As one of the closest suppliers to our operations, Ghanapala has become not only a trusted farmer, but also a friend and an important part of our day-to-day journey.
Ghanapala's story is rooted in responsibility and care. He looks after a nearby cassava plantation that belongs to a Sri Lankan family currently living abroad. They’ve entrusted their land to him, knowing it would be in safe, experienced hands. Under his watch, the cassava fields are maintained without chemicals, following local seasonal rhythms and using natural compost and water conservation techniques where possible.
But that’s only part of his day. On his own land, Ghanapala cultivates smaller crops—moringa, jackfruit, and cassava—which provide him with an important side income. These aren’t large-scale harvests, but they are grown with immense care and consistency. At Splendid Seasons, we buy these crops at a fair, above-market price, and they go into some of our most popular products—like our moringa capsules, jackfruit-based mixes, and dehydrated vegetable powders.
For Ghanapala, this partnership brings stability. It means not having to wait at weekly markets or deal with middlemen. It means knowing his work is valued, and that the food he grows ends up in products that are shared with families across the country—and even beyond. His proximity to our factory also allows him to check in often, sometimes bringing small samples of newly harvested goods to share.
Over the years, we’ve seen how farmers like Ghanapala—humble, hardworking, and dedicated—are the backbone of sustainable food systems. Through our ongoing partnership, he is not only supporting his own livelihood but also playing a small but meaningful role in reshaping what fair, local agriculture looks like in Sri Lanka.
