Gunapala’s Story – Keeping Rice Heritage Alive in Mihintale

Gunapala farms in Rambewa, near Mihintale in Sri Lanka's dry zone. He grows traditional rice varieties—the same types once grown for ancient kings, monks, and healers.
These native grains are different from modern rice. They take longer to grow, resist pests naturally, and are more nutritious. They also have a distinctive earthy, fragrant taste that's uniquely Sri Lankan.
Gunapala uses traditional farming methods without synthetic fertilizers or chemicals. He relies on cow dung, green fertilizers, neem and garlic for pest control, and hand weeding. It's hard work with smaller harvests, but produces pure, high-quality rice.
At Splendid Seasons, we buy his rice at above-market prices, making his traditional farming both meaningful and profitable. We use it in health porridges and flour blends for modern families.
While many farmers switch to fast-growing, high-input crops, Gunapala stays committed to methods that respect both land and health. By supporting him, we help preserve Sri Lanka's food heritage.
